Love to save bees. Check out this great post

Love bees? Check out this post on how to help them and things you can actively do to help raise awareness of the loss of the bees and how they are declining with the pesticides used. Not only that they are also having to struggle with colonies infested with bee mites.

If that wasn't enough add in the decreasing of wild flowers and grasslands it all puts a strain on there little bodies. Did you know that a worker bee only lives 15-38 days and on average a queen bee lives about 1-2 years. They dedicate there lives to the queen collecting pollen to make honey. Also bees will sleep on average 5-7 hours a night. They are also unable to flight while it is dark and have a shut off mechanism in there bodies.

Try not to use pesticides on your garden. Consider baked crushed egg shells on the soil to prevent slugs and snails and mix garlic with warm water shake and spray over the plants to prevent bugs and other leaf eating critters.

Fun facts

  • Bees have 5 eyes.
  • Bees are insects, so they have 6 legs.
  • Male bees in the hive are called drones.
  • Bees fly about 20 mph.
  • Female bees in the hive (except the queen) are called worker bees.
  • Number of eggs laid by queen: 2,000 per day is the high.
  • Losing its stinger will cause a bee to die. Bee will try every thing NOT to sting you.

Unlike there cousins wasps will sting for the fun of it and naturally seem grumpy, with their stinger gowning back. Where as a bee will die as soon as it stings and will literally rip its stinger out when it is sink into someone. So think twice next time when swotting a bee.

Honey bees live in purpose build hives or make there own hives, where a bumble bee (bigger than honey bees) live under the ground.

It is estimated that a bee can fly as fast as 35km/h.

Most worker bees have stings, but the drone bee lives within the hive and is main job is to tend to all the needs of the queen and mate with her to keep the colony going. They do not collect nectar or pollen like the other and will need assistance to feed from worker bees.

Queen bees are a different shape. They are slender in body shape and even spaced out banding.

Still find bees are boring, scary stingers. Think again.
